What Is Astrocartography? Your Birth Chart, Mapped Onto Earth

Astrocartography is the branch of astrology that takes your birth chart off the page and wraps it around the planet. It answers a question astrology usually can’t: not just who you are, but where you become most yourself.

The simple version

The moment you were born, every planet held a precise position in the sky. Astrocartography projects those positions down onto a map of Earth. As the globe turns, each planet traces invisible lines across the continents.

Where one of those lines passes through a place, that planet’s energy is amplified for you there: in how you feel, who you attract, and what tends to happen while you’re standing on that ground.

Two people born the same minute in different cities carry the same chart but live different lives, partly because the sky sat at a different angle over each of them. Astrocartography is the study of that angle.

Where it came from

The modern system was developed by American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, who coined the term Astro*Carto*Graphy and registered it as a trademark for his own service. He took a centuries-old idea, that place changes a chart, and turned it into something you could actually map.

The technique itself was never proprietary, and the plain word astrocartography has been the generic name for it for fifty years. Lewis built the map; the practice belongs to everyone.

What else this is called

Half the confusion in this subject is vocabulary. The same practice goes by a handful of names, and none of them is wrong:

• Locational astrology is the proper umbrella term, the branch of astrology concerned with place. Astrocartography sits inside it, alongside relocated charts and local space astrology. If you are reading a professional astrologer, this is usually the word they will use.
• Relocation astrology is the same field described by what people want from it: what a move would do to your chart. In practice it leans on the relocated chart more than on the lines.
• Astral mapping, astral cartography and astrology map are the informal names people reach for when they have seen the map but never heard the technical word. They mean this.
• Astro*Carto*Graphy, with the asterisks, is Jim Lewis's registered trademark for his specific service, not a general term for the method.
• Local space astrology is a genuinely different technique in the same family: directional lines radiating from where you stand, rather than lines drawn across the globe.

The four lines every planet draws

Each planet produces four key lines on your map, based on where it sat relative to the horizon at your birth:

• Ascendant (ASC) line: the planet was rising. Its energy shapes how you show up and how others first read you.
• Midheaven (MC) line: the planet was at the top of the sky. Tied to career, reputation, and public life.
• Descendant (DSC) line: the planet was setting. Felt most through relationships and the people you draw in.
• Imum Coeli (IC) line: the planet was at the lowest point. Reaches your private life, home, and roots.

Why a reading goes deeper than the lines

The lines are the headline, not the whole story. A real reading also looks at how the entire sky was arranged when seen from that specific place: the angles between planets, the houses they fall into once the chart is relocated, the patterns that only appear when you stand somewhere.

That’s the difference between “you have a Venus line near Lisbon” and understanding what living under it would actually feel like.
