What Is Astrocartography? Your Birth Chart, Mapped Onto Earth

Astrocartography is the branch of astrology that takes your birth chart off the page and wraps it around the planet. It answers a question astrology usually can’t: not just who you are, but where you become most yourself.

The simple version

The moment you were born, every planet held a precise position in the sky. Astrocartography projects those positions down onto a map of Earth. As the globe turns, each planet traces invisible lines across the continents. Where one of those lines passes through a place, that planet’s energy is amplified for you there — in how you feel, who you attract, and what tends to happen while you’re standing on that ground.

Two people born the same minute in different cities carry the same chart but live different lives, partly because the sky sat at a different angle over each of them. Astrocartography is the study of that angle.

Where it came from

The modern system was developed by American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, who coined the term AstroCartoGraphy. He took a centuries-old idea — that place changes a chart — and turned it into something you could actually map. It’s now the most widely used method for understanding how geography shapes a life, and it’s also called relocation astrology or locational astrology.

The four lines every planet draws

Each planet produces four key lines on your map, based on where it sat relative to the horizon at your birth:

A Venus line and a Saturn line crossing the same city pull in very different directions — which is the whole point. Here’s what each planetary line means.

Why a reading goes deeper than the lines

The lines are the headline, not the whole story. A real reading also looks at how the entire sky was arranged when seen from that specific place — the angles between planets, the houses they fall into once the chart is relocated, the patterns that only appear when you stand somewhere. That’s the difference between “you have a Venus line near Lisbon” and understanding what living under it would actually feel like.

Questions

Is astrocartography real astrology?

Yes — it’s a recognized branch of astrology (also called relocation or locational astrology), built on the same natal chart, just projected onto a map. Like all astrology, it’s a tool for reflection rather than prediction.

Do I need to believe in astrology for it to be useful?

Many people use it simply as a structured way to think about where they feel most themselves, most loved, or most ambitious. The map gives language to instincts you may already have about certain places.
